TRAILS

There are six interpreted trails on the battlefield with a total of fifty-five wayside exhibit signs.
The walking trails total two miles.

Trail #1Federal Bivouac Area where the federal army rested after marching 27 miles from Fort Gibson in 9 hours – over night, in the rain, and fighting skirmishes along the way.

Trail #2Federal Battle Line from where for an hour and fifteen minutes twelve cannon fired shells into the Confederate lines in the trees.

Trail #3Confederate Battle Line where the heavy hand-to-hand fighting began after two Federal charges were initially met by strong resistance. (In this unplowed area is more than 1/8-mile of the original Texas Road.)

Trail #4 – This quarter-mile trail leads to The Battle for the Bridge over Elk Creek; signs along the trail tell “How We Know What We Know” and identify pre-battle camp sites where many of the Confederate troops were having breakfast when the attack began.

Trail #5 – Wrapped behind a 20th Century Cemetery, this trail shows a portion of The Final Engagement with signs reporting what happened to the wounded and the dead and containing letters written by soldiers a day or two after the battle.

Trail #6 – This trail by the monuments points out the location of the Confederate Headquarters & Supply Depot which is the reason the battle took place here.
